Research Bringing Hope

Research is the key to changing the future for children affected by Acute Necrotizing Encephalopathy (ANE). Because this disease is so rare, every discovery brings us one step closer to earlier diagnosis, better treatments, and ultimately, a cure.

At the Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, Dr. Erika Davis and her team are leading groundbreaking research to better understand how ANE develops, particularly in children with RANBP2-associated ANE. Their work is focused on uncovering why certain viral infections trigger devastating brain inflammation and identifying therapies that could prevent or lessen the effects of the disease.

Through innovative human cell models and the development of the first targeted mouse model carrying the same RANBP2 mutation found in affected children, this research is creating the foundation needed to test future treatments and accelerate discoveries from the laboratory to clinical trials.
